Mel's Yoga Corner is a safe space to practice yoga and bring a little mindfulness into your life!
Hi! My name is Melissa Sciarretta, and I am from Vancouver, Canada. In addition to being a 200 hour Registered Yoga Teacher, I am vegan, an animal lover and a travel enthusiast. I am also a big advocate for self-expression and enjoy having multiple creative outlets. For me, practicing and teaching yoga fulfils those aspirations.
I grew up dancing competitively and performing in musicals in Vancouver. As a teenager, I struggled with anxiety and found my mental health was deteriorating. I had always heard that yoga could help heal the mind and knew that it would supplement my dance training, so I thought I’d give it a try. I found a studio near home and signed up for their 30-day challenge. After just one month, I noticed major improvements in my mood and self-esteem. My passion for yoga continued to grow as I moved forward with my practice.
The year after I graduated high school, I took a 4-month backpacking trip across Southeast Asia. The atmosphere organically created by the people, culture, landscapes, and food of the countries I visited, had such a positive impact on my mindset and my life. It truly was a spiritual awakening. After coming home for a few months, I still hadn’t shaken the travel bug, so I decided to move to Australia. It was phenomenal! Then the pandemic hit…
As lockdown took its toll, I noticed I began to slip back into some bad habits regarding my mental health. I, as I’m sure many can relate, found myself in a bit of a dark place. This is when I decided to turn back to yoga. I challenged myself to enrol in a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training program. I studied online with the Yoga and Ayurveda Center program and registered with Yoga Alliance. I furthered my education with Chair Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Ayurveda Specialist certifications. After completing these courses, I moved back to my roots here in Vancouver with a little detour on the way to my partner’s home in Ireland. After a lot of changes this year, I found stability through my practice, and now I would like to share it with you!
My goal for Mel’s Yoga Corner is to educate my students of the roots of yoga and create a safe space to empower others.
